Tens of thousands of viewers watched a fake Apple presentation
Yesterday the attention of many viewers was drawn to the presentation of new Apple gadgets. And fraudsters decided to take advantage of this good opportunity.
Details
Apple was broadcasting the event live on YouTube, and there appeared a video with a fake presentation. The fake live broadcast attracted attention because it included an array of Apple keywords in both the title and the description. For example, the title is rather odd - "Apple Event Live. Apple CEO Tim Cook: Apple and the Metaverse in 2022." The author also added Bitcoin and Ethereum logos to the video stream, the text "Apple Crypto Event 2022" and the caption in bold "URGENT NEWS" at the bottom. And if you actually clicked on the channel page (which claimed to be "Apple LIVE"), the URL had nothing to do with Apple.
In fact, it was live streaming an old interview with Tim Cook that he gave to CNN in 2018. What's interesting is that at the same time Tim Cook was being interviewed at the Vox Media Code conference about the launch of the iPhone 14.
What was it for? The video was used to draw attention to cryptocurrency fraud. And the venture was successful: at some point, the number of viewers of the fake presentation amounted to about 70 thousand.
YouTube has already removed this and similar broadcasts.
