Sony does not plan to add games on release to PlayStation Plus. The company wants to use the service as an opportunity to give projects a second wind
As gamesindustry reports at the GI Live: London, PlayStation Indies director Shuhei Yoshida spoke about Sony's approach to the updated PS Plus service. The company does not plan to release games on the day of release to the library.
Here's What We Know
It's no secret that Microsoft actively releases its games on the day of release to the Xbox Game Pass service. But its direct competitor Sony does not support this approach.
Yoshida explained that the games should be added to the PS Plus service in three months, six months or three years, when the sales of the game decrease. This can help introduce these games to a new, wider audience. Some people may have missed out on these games when they came out, and this is a great chance to play them and create word of mouth to help build interest in the franchise.
It's a bit like a movie, where after the cinema release, the film is released on disc and starts to be broadcast on TV and in digital cinemas to give the project a second wind.
Later in the conversation, he pointed out that subscription services are still kind of experimental for Sony at this time. Although Stray, which was released on the day of release in PS Plus Extra, became a good example of success for the service and helped to immediately reach a wide audience and create a strong fanbase around the game. Rocket League and Fall Guys also became available to PS Plus subscribers on release and their story was similar to Stray.
