Gabe Newell says Steam doesn't need Microsoft's Call of Duty guarantee "because we trust their intentions"
Regulators around the world are closely investigating the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft, and the latter in turn assures everyone of the purity of its intentions. However, it seems Steam does not have to assure - Gabe Newell told Kotaku that there is nothing against it and that it does not need any guarantees from Microsoft.
"We're excited that Microsoft wants to continue to use Steam to engage customers with Call of Duty after their acquisition of Activision is complete," Newell said. "Microsoft has been on Steam for a long time and we take this as a signal that they are pleased with the gamer experience and the work we are doing.
Our job is to continue to build valuable features not only for Microsoft, but for all Steam customers and punters.Microsoft has offered and even sent us a draft long-term commitment agreement for Call of Duty. But we didn't need it because:
a) we don't believe in any partner having an agreement that blocks them from delivering games on Steam for the foreseeable future;
b) Phil and the team have always delivered on what they've told us, so we trust their intentions;
c) we believe Microsoft has all the motivation they need to be on the platforms and devices where Call of Duty customers want to be."
Thus Microsoft suddenly got another powerful ally in the purchase of Activision Blizzard.
