U.S. sends MQ-9 Reaper drones to upgraded military base in Greece
The U.S. Air Force has confirmed the shipment of MQ-9 Reaper drones to Greece.
Here's What We Know
General Atomics' new home for drones is Larissa Air Base off the Aegean coast, which underwent a $21 million upgrade this year, and the work was completed a few weeks ago. On the territory of the base, paths were widened and hangars were built for maintenance of drones. In addition, the modernization of the military facility will allow Greece itself to purchase UAVs, for which it has long had an interest.
The Greek Reporter reported on the arrival of the MQ-9 Reaper in November. Now the U.S. Air Force has officially confirmed the shipment of the drones, without specifying the number. The Air Force attributed it to operational security. Although the Greek media wrote about eight drones.
The Larissa base is a strategically important site. From here, the U.S. military can simultaneously monitor the eastern and southern borders of NATO.
