Redwood Materials invests $3.5 billion in electric car battery recycling plant in Southern California
In the foreseeable future, Southern California will have a battery recycling facility for electric cars.
Here's What We Know
Redwood Materials, founded by former Tesla CTO Jeffrey Straubel, is investing $3.5 billion to build the plant. The facility will be located near the city of Charleston.
The plant will occupy an area of 243 hectares (600 acres). Construction will begin in the first quarter of next year, and by the end of the year, Redwood Materials wants to launch its first battery recycling processor. Within 10 years, the U.S. company will increase its workforce to 1,500 employees.
Construction of the plant will reduce emissions by 80% compared to the current supply chain of recycled products from Asia, since they are not sold in the U.S. Redwood Materials says no fossil fuels will be used in the battery recycling process. In addition, the company plans to leave the facility without a gas supply.
Some of the material that will be obtained from battery recycling can be reused to make batteries. Now we have to buy such components mainly in Asian countries.
