According to media reports, Greece is ready to transfer its S-300 air defense systems to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Here's What We Know

According to the country's defense minister, Greece is ready to give up Russian anti-aircraft missile systems and remove them from the island of Crete, but on the condition that the US will put Patriot SAMs there. Greece is also ready to withdraw from service the Tor-M1 and the Osa SAMs by such a system. The Greeks have been using these SAMs since the 1990s. By the way, all Greece has about two divisions of S-300PMU-1 (the export version of S-300PM).

Flashback

The S-300 is a family of Soviet/Russian medium-range surface-to-air missile systems. Series development of the system with the index S-300PT was launched in 1975. In 1978, tests of the system were completed, and in 1979 the first regiment S-300 went on combat duty. The maximum range of the complex is 300 km (depending on the modification).
