Tesla Semi trucks with Pepsi soda will only go 160 km, and with Lay's chips - 684 km
Mike O'Connell, vice president of PepsiCo, revealed a little information about the specifics of the Tesla Semi electric trucks.
Here's What We Know
First, let's go back a few weeks. At the end of January, Tesla tested the Semi truck when it was fully loaded. On a single charge, it was able to cover more than 800 kilometers on flat terrain and in the mountains. A couple of days later Tesla began delivering cars to its first customer, which is PepsiCo. Moreover, it is in the top version, which has a range of 805 km / 500 miles (there is also a version with 480 km / 300 miles).
Despite the fact that Semi can travel more than 800 km, Pepsi Co does not plan to use new trucks "at full power”. The company received 36 vehicles and will distribute them among its logistics centers in California. By the end of 2023, the fleet will already consist of a hundred trucks.
According to O'Connell, the Pepsi soda trucks will only cover 160 miles. Lay's chip trucks will be able to deliver products up to 684 kilometers. The vice-president of PepsiCo did not specify with what such approach is connected. However, he emphasized that in the case of chips, after a 684 km trip, the Tesla Semi will have a remaining battery charge of 20%. Divide the distance of 684 km by the remaining 80% and we get a range of 855 km. But here we need to understand that in the case of potato chips, a full body load by volume does not mean a full load by weight.
At the final points of the route PepsiCo intends to build charging stations with the capacity of 750 kW. It is possible that the funds for them will be allocated by the California authorities as subsidies (total of $15,4 million). There is no official information about the cost of the trucks themselves yet. According to unconfirmed reports, Tesla Semi will cost $150,000 and $180,000 depending on range.
