Apollo Go robo-taxi service popularity increased by 311% in China - Baidu operator received permission for passenger transportation in the evening

The Chinese company Baidu has received permission to carry out passenger transportation using unmanned cars in the dark.

The cab service is called Apollo Go. In the third quarter of 2022 compared to the same period last year, the number of trips increased by 311%, reaching 474,000. Baidu uses completely unmanned cars with no driver. The cars are equipped with cameras, lidars and radars that collect data for the automatic piloting system.

Authorities in the Chinese city of Wuhan, with a population of 10 million people, have allowed robotaxis to be used at night. Previously passengers could use the services of Apollo Go in the period from 07:00 to 17:00 local time. Now Baidu cabs will be able to run on city streets until 23:00. It is expected that the company will be able to increase its customer base by 1 million people.
