Amazon launches drone delivery service in two US states
The U.S. digital commerce giant has begun delivering goods using drones. Amazon Prime Air is available in two U.S. states.
Here's What We Know
Residents of College Station, Texas, and Lockford, California, can now take advantage of drone delivery services. Amazon's drones are capable of transporting cargo weighing up to 2.3 kilograms. The company notes that 85% of parcels fit that criterion. Delivery takes no more than 1 hour.
Only a few months elapsed between approval to launch unmanned delivery and implementation. In August 2022, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved the commercial use of drones to deliver goods.
To use the new service, you must first sign up for Amazon Prime Air. During checkout, the drone delivery service now appears. Once confirmed, the customer will receive additional information to track the package. The drone will deliver the item to the backyard of the house. It will descend, drop the package and fly away.
Amazon uses the MK27-2 drone. It is a hexacopter with six propellers, which has a low noise level. The delivery will be monitored by an operator.
