Not just Leopard 2: Poland transfers 60 PT-91 Twardy tanks to Ukrainian Armed Forces

Poland recently announced that it would transfer 14 German Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. As it turned out, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will also receive 60 tanks of another model.

Here's What We Know

We are talking about PT-91 Twardy tanks. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told about it. Deliveries of the tanks are to commence soon. By the way, transfer of PT-91 Twardy was talked about in July 2022, but then it was only a rumour. By the way, in total 232 PT-91 Twardy tanks are in service of Poland.

Flashback

PT-91 Twardy is a Polish main battle tank, based on the Soviet T-72M1. The first prototypes of the PT-91 were made in 1993. The base version of the tank was serially produced at the Bumar Labendy factory between 1995 and 2002. The main feature of the PT-91 is the Twardy protection using ERAWA's own active armour. It has 394 blocks. They cover the front of the hull and turret. These blocks are placed with little or no clearance to each other. Tests have shown that ERAWA blocks increase the tank's protection by 30-70%, depending on the type of projectile.
