Colombian judge uses ChatGPT to resolve a case
According to Vice, the judge of the First District of Colombia, Juan Manuel Padilla Garcia, used ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-based chatbot, to resolve a case in Cartagena. He stated this in court documents on 30 January.
"What we are really looking for is to optimize the time spent drafting judgements after corroborating the information provided by AI, - Garcia explained in the court document"
The case was about a health insurance company and the family of an autistic child regarding the child's health insurance.
Apparently, the judge based his decision in the case on the chatbot's answers to legal precedents and claims that all the answers were supported by the facts of the case (which is actually an important condition, given the random bias and unreliability of such bots). He claims that he wanted to speed up the decision-making process and succeeded.
It is still difficult to say for sure whether it is good or bad that artificial intelligence is so rapidly entering our lives and is even involved in the resolution of court cases, but in any case, partial optimisation of routine work with the help of AI does not look so bad.
