Associated Press: US decides to give Ukraine M1A1 Abrams tanks instead of M1A2 Abrams
In January, the United States announced that it would transfer 31 M1A2 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, but it will take a year or more to deliver the weaponry. It seems that the government has now found a solution to send the equipment faster.
Here's What We Know
According to the Associated Press, the US Department of Defense has decided to transfer older tank modifications to Ukraine. That is, instead of the M1A2 Abrams, which was planned to be purchased from companies, the AFU will receive the M1A1 version from the Pentagon's stocks. According to the source, such a decision will also simplify the process of training Ukrainian crews. Presumably, the US will officially announce this as early as next week.
Flashback
Abrams is a third generation main battle tank manufactured in the USA. The tank is named after General Creighton Abrams, former chief of staff of the US Army and commander of US forces in Vietnam from 1968 to 1972. The Abrams is a heavily armed, armoured, mobile fighting vehicle designed for combat operations in a variety of environments.
