Italy becomes first country in the world to ban ChatGPT neural network - Open AI faces $20m fine

Italy has restricted the use of artificial intelligence ChatGPT. The Data Protection Agency has launched an investigation into a possible breach of data collection and processing rules.

Here's What We Know

The agency has restricted the operation of the chatbot for the duration of the investigation. Also ChatGPT cannot use personal data of users from Italy. So far no other country in the world has imposed similar sanctions against the chatbot developed by Open AI.

Italy's data protection agency has said that the AI algorithm does not check users' ages. However, it is legally forbidden for anyone under 13 to interact with ChatGPT.

The regulator said there was no legal basis to explain the massive collection of user data for the purpose of training artificial intelligence. The ChatGPT chatbot will be restricted in Italy until OpenAI brings it into line with EU data protection law.

The company has been given 20 days to do so. Otherwise it will be fined 4% of its annual turnover or $20m.
