Northrop Grumman unveils Maritime Strike long-range missile concept
Northrop Grumman has unveiled a new concept for a long-range missile equipped with an air-to-air propulsion system. The mock-up was shown at the annual Sea-Air-Space 2023 exhibition along with the AGM-88G AARGM-ER missile.
Here's What We Know
Expectedly, Northrop Grumman is keeping details of the new missile under wraps for now. A company spokesman noted that the project builds on previous developments. He also added that the new missile can be launched from a ship, an aircraft or a ground-based launcher.
Externally, the mock-up resembles the AGM-88G AARGM-ER missile. First of all, the similarity lies in the tail fins. In the case of the AARGM-ER, it provides additional lift as well as improved speed, launch range and maneuverability at higher altitudes.
To conclude, the concept for the new missile was revealed days after Northrop Grumman teamed up with Raytheon to announce work on Long Range Maneuverable Fires (LRMF). The companies have been awarded almost $100m to develop the M142 HIMARS missile, which will have a launch range of 1,000km.
