Amazon makes its AI-based code writing assistant CodeWriter free to compete with Microsoft

Amazon is making its AI-powered coding assistant free of charge, the company announced in a post on Thursday. The CodeWriter tool is now available to anyone who has previously registered to use it.

Here's What We Know

Last year, Amazon introduced CodeWhisperer as a developer preview that can be used in various integrated development environments (IDEs) such as Visual Studio Code to automatically generate lines of code based on text prompts. Initially, this tool was only available to Amazon Web Services customers, but the recently announced free tier will make it much more accessible to non-AWS developers.

Flashback

CodeWhisperer is a tool that automatically filters out potentially biased or unfair code offerings and flags any code that resembles open source training data. It is also equipped with security scanning features that detect vulnerabilities in a developer's code and provide suggestions for closing any security gaps. CodeWhisperer supports several programming languages, including Python, Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, as well as Go, Rust, PHP, Ruby, Kotlin, C, C++, Shell scripting, SQL, and Scala.
