General Motors shuts down production of the $26,500 Chevrolet Bolt EV
General Motors has announced that it is shutting down production of the affordable Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV electric cars at the end of this year.
Here's What We Know
Production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV is set to end at General Motors' plant in Michigan. Next year, the facility will be retooled to start production of pickup trucks on the Ultium platform. The demand for pickups, crossovers and SUVs in the US is much higher than for small hatchbacks. In addition, the new General Motors platform will allow the production of electric cars with increased range.
The Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV start at $26,500. At the moment, these are the cheapest electric cars in General Motors' lineup. After production ceases, that title will go to the Equinox EV electric crossover with a range of nearly 480 km and a cost of about $30,000. The Equinox EV will be based on the Ultium platform by the autumn and the first along with the Blazer SS.
According to General Motors, for 75% of car owners, the Bolt is the company's first car. 80% of them are ready to buy another Chevrolet.
