SpaceX will not limit data speeds on Starlink when using 1TB in the US and Canada
In late 2022, it was reported that in the US and Canada, SpaceX would limit data speeds on Starlink when the limit, set at 1TB per month, was reached. Nearly six months later, the US company has changed its mind about imposing the limit.
Here's What We Know
The limits were originally supposed to go into effect in December 2022, but SpaceX first moved the introduction to February 2023 and then pushed it back another two months. There is now no mention of traffic limits at all on the Starlink website.
Recall that the "Fair Use Policy" was to reduce satellite internet speeds when the limit of 1TB of data per month was reached. The restrictions were to apply from 07:00 to 23:00. The cost of additional traffic at normal speeds would have been $0.25 per 1GB.
Starlink now offers unlimited data on "standard" service plans! The 1Mbps cap has been removed for "priority" plans, with unlimited standard access. The new version of the Fair Usage Policy states that Starlink customers will receive unlimited data each month under the terms of the Standard tariff. Download speeds will be 25-100Mbps and 5-50Mbps for home and roaming users respectively.
However, SpaceX will still be able to limit the connection. It is reported that in the event of regularly exceeding the set bandwidth level, the company may temporarily reduce the speed to prevent service congestion. Streaming apps will be primarily affected.
