The iPhone is once again out of the competition, with 4 Apple models and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra in Top 5 best-selling smartphones over $500
In the first quarter of 2023, the share of smartphones priced at $500 or more was 31%. Expectedly, Apple models led the way, but quite unexpectedly the next-generation Pro Max version took the top spot.
Here's What We Know
Yes, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is the best-selling smartphone priced from $500 in the first quarter of 2023. The Pro version is in second place, with the regular iPhone 14 rounding out the top three. The iPhone 13, which led the way a year ago, is now in fourth place, well behind the top 3.

Samsung's first smartphone is only in 5th place, the Galaxy S23 Ultra. The standard edition ended up two places down, with the Plus version placed another two places down. Between the Galaxy S23 Ultra and Galaxy S23 was the iPhone 14 Plus, while between the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ was the iPhone 12, which was introduced in 2020.
The Top 10 was rounded up by the Samsung Galaxy Flip 4, which managed to beat out the third-generation iPhone SE. That in turn was more popular than the Samsung Galaxy S22. The Xiaomi 13, Huawei Mate 50 and Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G also made the list of the 15 best-selling smartphones of early 2023.
Looking at the segment as a whole, it's worth noting that it grew by 4.7% year-on-year. This is quite an indicator considering the fact that the global smartphone market shrank by 13.3% at once in the reporting period.
