Germany will purchase Euro-PULS missile systems with a maximum range of 300 km to replace MARS II

The MARS II multiple rocket launcher systems are in service with the German army. They are the European equivalent of the M270 MLRS. But Germany wants the next generation of mobile rocket systems on a wheeled chassis. The development is called Euro-PULS.

Here's What We Know

According to Bild, Germany intends to buy the Euro-PULS to replace the MARS II. The purchase is supported by many military officials, but it has not yet been officially announced. If the deal goes through, the Bundeswehr's rocket artillery fleet would increase to 80 rocket systems.

The Euro-PULS is based on Israel's Precise and Universal Launching System (PULS) from Elbit Systems. It features a wide range of munitions:

  • 122mm Accular / 18 missiles - 35km;
  • 160mm Accular / 10 missiles - 40 km;
  • EXTRA / 4 missiles - 150 km;
  • Predator Hawk / 2 missiles - 300 km.

Elbit will be working with Germany's Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) to develop the Euro-PULS. This was announced at the end of December last year, six months after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding. You can see what the system will look like in the image below.

Euro-PULS envisages a minor redesign of the off-the-shelf multiple rocket launcher system. The PULS will be equipped with additional ammunition and instruments, as required by the customer. The new system has been offered to potential customers in Europe even before the project was launched. Elbit and KMW believe that Euro-PULS will find buyers.
