Apple unveils M2 Ultra - 'the world's most powerful chip ever made for a PC'
Today, on the first day of WWDC, Apple unveiled a new PC chip, the M2 Ultra. It powers the redesigned Mac Studio and Mac Pro models, which also debuted on the day. But first things first.
Here's What's New About It
The M2 Ultra is currently the most powerful chip in Apple's lineup. Though Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technology, immodestly claimed at the launch that it's "the world's most powerful chip ever made for a personal computer". And his numbers are indeed impressive.
So, the M2 Ultra is built using second-generation 5nm process technology and uses Apple's revolutionary UltraFusion technology to connect the crystals of two M2 Max chips, doubling the performance of the chip. The M2 Ultra is made up of 134 billion transistors - 20 billion more than the M1 Ultra. The powerful processor is 20% faster than the M1 Ultra, the graphics processor is up to 30% faster, and the Neural Engine is 40% faster. The powerful media engine is twice as powerful as the M2 Max and allows the M2 Ultra to play up to 22 streams of 8K ProRes 422 video - far more than any PC chip can do.The engine also supports up to six Pro Display XDR with a resolution of over 100 million pixels.
Finally, the unified memory architecture supports up to 192GB of memory, 50% more than the M1 Ultra, and delivers 800GB/s memory bandwidth, twice that of the M2 Max.
According to Apple, with these improvements, the M2 Ultra takes Mac performance to a whole new level.
