Transition to Apple Silicon complete: New Mac Pro with M2 Ultra chip debuted at WWDC
The Mac Pro has until now been the last Mac to use an Intel processor. But today, the switch to Apple's proprietary Silicon systems is complete with the release of the redesigned Mac Pro with the new M2 Ultra chip.
Here's What We Know
Apple has updated the Mac Pro for the first time in four years, but if you compare externally - you'll hardly find a difference with the last model. At a glance, it's still the same computer whose design has spawned quite a few memes and become a major topic of discussion in 2019. All because of the case with a lot of holes, which is still being compared to a kitchen grater.
The main changes lie inside. First and foremost is the M2 Ultra - by far the most powerful chip in Apple's line-up. It's made on a 5nm processor, includes a 24-core processor, up to 76 GPU cores and supports up to 192GB of memory. As a result, the new PC is up to three times faster than the Intel-based Mac Pro.
It also has twice as many Thunderbolt 4 ports - as many as eight. It supports up to six Pro Display XDRs, plus Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 for fast wireless connectivity. In addition, there are 3 USB-A ports, 2 higher bandwidth HDMI ports supporting up to 8K resolution and frame rates up to 240Hz, 2 10Gbps Ethernet ports and a headphone jack. The Mac Pro offers six open PCIe Gen 4 expansion card slots.
The new Mac Pro goes on sale June 13, but pre-orders are available starting today. The minimum price for the new Mac Pro is $6999, $1,000 more than the previous Intel-based Mac Pro.
