The Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine USS Michigan carrying 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles arrives in South Korea for the first time since 2017
The US Navy has temporarily deployed an Ohio-class nuclear submarine to South Korea. But so far with Tomahawk missiles rather than Trident II (D5) missiles, which carry nuclear warheads.
Here's What We Know
In the spring, it became known that a submarine carrying ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons would arrive in Korea for the first time in decades. But that will happen in the future, but for now the USS Michigan (SSGN 727) has docked in the country.
The nuclear-powered submarine has arrived at the naval base in Busan. This is USS Michigan (SSGN 727)'s first visit to an Asian country since 2017. It came after North Korea launched two ballistic missiles towards the East Sea on June 15th.
The USS Michigan (SSGN 727) visit to South Korea is aimed at implementing the agreement in the "Washington Declaration", which was adopted in mid-spring 2023. During its stay in the country, the submarine will take part in joint exercises of the two countries.
