AS9 Huntsman self-propelled howitzer learns to fire Rheinmetall Assegai 155mm shells before being shipped to Australia
South Korea's Hanwha Defense has tested the AS9 Huntsman self-propelled howitzer. As part of the tests, the artillery unit used Rheinmetall Assegai projectiles.
Here's What We Know
Hanwha Defense plans to supply the AS9 Huntsman howitzer to the Australian Armed Forces. As such, the South Korean company must ensure compatibility with the Australian-made Rheinmetall Assegai shells.
Testing of the AS9 Huntsman has not yet been completed. Hanwha Defense intends to conduct tests in the future to collect ballistic data, which is necessary for firing coordination. Tests are also planned to test the combat vehicle's protection against projectiles, gunfire and shrapnel.
The AS9 Huntsman is based on the K9 Thunder howitzer. Australia has ordered several dozen self-propelled artillery pieces and 15 AS10 transport and loader vehicles. In 2024, production of the AS9 will commence at the Hanwha Defence Australia plant, which has already commenced construction.
