Joni Ive and his firm have completed their first project since leaving Apple - a $60,000 vinyl record player

Design firm LoveFrom, founded by former Apple head of design Jony Ive, has designed a new product, the Sondek LP12 vinyl turntable.

Details

This is an exclusive version of the Linn Sondek LP12 turntable marking its 50th anniversary. Turntable manufacturer, audio brand Linn, took care of the 'stuffing' of the unit, with Joni Ive's LoveFrom Company handling the design. Linn CEO Gilad Tiefenbrun said the collaboration dates back to early 2022, when Tiefenbrun was unexpectedly offered a meeting with Ive via LinkedIn.

Interestingly, Fast Company reports that LoveFrom's work on the Linn Sondek LP12-50 was pro bono and there is no contract or other financial arrangement between the two firms. ""There’s a substantial percentage of our work which we do purely for the love of doing it"," Ive said, noting that the design firm makes money from its long-term contracts with companies such as Airbnb and Ferrari.

A total of 250 Linn Sondek LP12-50 models will be produced with the updated design. They will be produced and delivered between August 2023 and March 2024. But those wishing to reserve a limited edition turntable can already do so now - it costs $60,000.
