Dolphin Emulator won't be released on Steam after all - developers failed to reach an agreement with Nintendo
Earlier this year, the developer of Dolphin Emulator, which allows you to run games from GameCube and Wii, reported that the release of the program on Steam was postponed for an "indefinite period of time", but recently it announced that it completely abandons plans to add its emulator to Steam.
Here's What We Know
The reason for this decision was that Valve contacted Nintendo for information about the planned launch of the emulator on Steam. In response, the company received a request from Nintendo of America to ban the release of Dolphin, citing the DMCA law.
Valve passed on the response from Nintendo to the Dolphin development team and noted that in order to launch the emulator on Steam, they needed to coordinate it directly with Nintendo.
After much deliberation, Dolphin developers decided to abandon the idea of releasing the emulator on Steam, as they could not do so from a legal point of view, and it was unlikely to reach an agreement with Nintendo.
In an interview with Kotaku, a Nintendo representative stressed that the company considers it its duty to protect the work of its engineers and video game developers. The launch of illegal copies of games using emulators can harm development and lead to the suppression of innovation. Nintendo is committed to protecting intellectual property rights and expects other companies to do the same.
