Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus: USB-C instead of Lightning, 48 MP camera and Dynamic Island from $799
At today's presentation, Apple unveiled some of the most anticipated smartphones of the year - iPhone 15. By tradition, the lineup consists of four models. For now, let's talk about the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
Here's What We've Seen
Changes compared to the last generation are not so many, but they are there. Most importantly, all smartphones in the lineup have switched to USB-C instead of the proprietary Lightning connector. Apple mentioned this innovation in passing, and it's not surprising: the company resisted the transition to USB-C, but was forced to do it because of the new regulations adopted in Europe.
The smaller models differ in size: the Phone 15 has a 6.1-inch display, while the iPhone 15 Plus has a 6.7-inch screen. Otherwise, they are almost identical. Finally the regular iPhone 15 features the Dynamic Island notch. It debuted last year, but until then it remained exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The peak brightness of the Super Retina XDR display reaches 2,000 nits - double that of the previous generation.
Another change is the improved camera. The main sensor has a resolution of 48 MP instead of 12 MP. 2x zoom without loss of quality is claimed, as well as sharper detail in photos, brighter colours and improved low-light performance. The second camera is 12MP.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus continue to use last year's A16 Bionic processor - so Apple draws a clear line between the regular models and the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which have the more powerful chip.
The iPhone 15 continues to do options like collision detection and emergency communication via satellite. But it's still only an SMS sending option.
Here's What It Costs
The iPhone 15 is priced from $799, and the iPhone 15 Plus is priced from $899. They are available in pink, yellow, green, blue and black colours. Pre-orders will start on September 15 and sales will start on September 22.
