The Russian Navy will receive the nuclear-powered submarine K-571 Krasnoyarsk, which will be the carrier of hypersonic anti-ship missiles Zirkon, capable of travelling at speeds of more than 11,000 km/h
The Russians claim that together with the submarine"Emperor Alexander III", another nuclear submarine will be added to the fleet by the beginning of 2024. The second ship is called the K-571 Krasnoyarsk.
Here's What We Know
The fourth-generation nuclear submarine is the fourth ship to be built under the modernised Yasen-M project. The K-571 Krasnoyarsk was launched in mid-summer 2021.
A year after the launch, the submarine went for sea trials, but failed to pass them on time. The delays resulted in K-571 Krasnoyarsk not being commissioned into the fleet in 2022 as originally planned.
Unlike the strategic cruiser Emperor Alexander III, the Krasnoyarsk submarine will not receive ballistic missiles. But it will be equipped with launchers for hypersonic weapons. In particular, we are talking about anti-ship missiles "Zirkon". The Russians claim that they can reach speeds of up to Mach 9 (11,025 km/h). But, as usual, such claims have to be divided by two.
In addition to the Zirkon, the K-571 Krasnoyarsk nuclear submarine will be armed with 533mm torpedoes, Kalibr cruise missiles and Onyx anti-ship missiles as an alternative to the Zirkon. The submarine will receive Igla and Verba systems for defence against air threats.
