Microsoft released a "budget" Surface Laptop for $ 800

In the US store Microsoft appeared a simplified version of the laptop Surface Laptop on the Core M. It was estimated at $ 800, which is $ 200 cheaper than the configuration with the Core i5 of the seventh generation.

Surface Laptop with 13.5-inch display PixelSense (2256x1504 pixels) with support for touch input. The new version is equipped with an Intel Core m3-7Y30 chip, 4 GB of RAM and a 128 GB SSD. The case is metal, and Alcantara is used to trim the area around the keyboard and the touchpad. Pleasant to the touch the material resembles suede, but over time the coating can wear out. The operating system is Windows 10 S, which supports the installation of applications and games only from the Microsoft Store and offers to use the proprietary Microsoft Edge browser without alternatives.

The cheapest Surface Laptop is only available in gray. The thickness of the metal case is only 14.14 mm, the laptop weighs 1.25 kg. Microsoft claims about 14.5 hours of battery life when playing video. In a mixed mode, the results will be more modest, although Core M consumes fewer chips of older lines, and the new version simply has to last longer.

Should I take it?

If you need a beautiful laptop with good autonomy for simple tasks, then the "budget" Surface Laptop can be considered for purchase. Moreover, it makes no sense to overpay for the version with Core i5 (we suspect, hence, discrimination based on color). In any case, we find it easier to find the same Xiaomi Mi Notebook Air 12.5 with similar characteristics and price up to $ 700, but with Chinese Windows 10 or absolutely no OS.

Another interesting offer by Microsoft in the US is a $ 200 discount on Surface Laptop with Core i5-7200U, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB SSD. Now this configuration costs $ 1,100.
