More than 30 people are suing Apple over AirTag trackers used by stalkers to track them
Apple is facing a class action lawsuit in federal court in San Francisco, with more than 30 people claiming that stalkers used AirTag trackers to illegally track them.
Here's What We Know
The plaintiffs accuse Apple of negligence for allowing AirTags to become "one of the most dangerous and frightening technologies used by stalkers," because they can easily be used to determine another person's location.
The lawsuit was originally filed in December 2022 by two women. One of them claimed that her ex-boyfriend used AirTag to spy on her. After that, more and more reports of stalking using AirTag began to surface. As evidence, the plaintiffs cite more than 150 police reports in the U.S. as of April 2022, as well as international cases of stalking using AirTag.
There are now more than 30 plaintiffs. They are unhappy that Apple has not taken enough steps to prevent stalkers from using the trackers for surveillance.
After massive reports of stalking, carjacking and other crimes using AirTag, Apple made several updates to the devices. For example, it added a warning that using it to track people is a crime, increased the audio volume, and released the Tracker Detect app, which allows Android users to scan the AirTag to make sure they're not nearby.
Despite these updates, the plaintiffs argue that AirTags remain dangerous.
