The U.S. has banned NVIDIA from selling the A800 and H800 chips, which were designed to circumvent export restrictions, to China
The US authorities have imposed new restrictions on the export of high-tech chips to China. The A800 and H800 computing accelerators have fallen under the ban.
Here's What We Know
In autumn 2022, the US banned the export of chips with a certain data transfer rate to China. The restrictions affected the A100 and H100 computing accelerators. To solve the problem, NVIDIA created their simplified versions - A800 and H800 respectively.
According to Bloomberg, the new export control rules now affect the A800 and H800 chips. When exporting lower-performance computing accelerators, companies must declare the shipments. Review of the notification will take 25 days. At the end of the review, a decision will be made as to whether an export licence is required.
The extension of export restrictions is due to the fact that Chinese companies can achieve the desired level of performance by using large quantities of lower-performance chips. U.S. officials believe this would pose a threat to U.S. national security.
