The US will deploy the THAAD missile defence system in the Middle East, which can detect targets within a radius of 1,000km and intercept threats at altitudes of up to 150km
The United States will deploy a new missile defence system in the Middle East. This is reported by the official website of the Pentagon.
Here's What We Know
The protection of the sky in the Middle East will be provided by the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) complex. The US Department of Defence believes that this move will strengthen deterrence in the region, strengthen the protection of US forces and help provide additional protection for Israel.
The THAAD system is designed to intercept enemy ballistic missiles within a radius of 200 kilometres at an altitude of up to 150 kilometres. At the same time, the system includes a radar station that can detect airborne threats at a range of up to 1,000 kilometres.
The single-stage solid-propellant missile interceptor can reach speeds of more than 10,000 km/h outside the atmosphere and shoot down ballistic missiles with a launch range of 3,500 km. It is 6.17 metres long, up to 370mm in diameter and weighs 900kg.
