Powerful artificial intelligence systems threaten social stability, says a panel of leading experts, including two "godfathers" of the technology.
Here's What We Know
According to the experts, the drive to build ever more powerful AI systems without understanding how to make them safe is "utterly reckless". They made a number of suggestions, including:
- Allocating funds for the safe use of AI;
- giving auditors access to AI labs;
- introducing licensing of advanced models.
The experts also suggested holding tech companies responsible for preventable harm from their systems.
Co-authors include two of the three "godfathers of AI" Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman, Sapiens author Yuval Noah Harari and other prominent experts.
They warned that there are already signs of dangerous AI capabilities, such as in the GPT-4 model on which ChatGPT is based. Experts fear the emergence of autonomous systems beyond human control.
