Two weeks after departing the United States, an aircraft carrier strike group led by USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) arrived in the Mediterranean Sea. The ships crossed the Strait of Gibraltar over the weekend.
Here's What We Know
The aircraft carrier strike group, in addition to USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69), includes the Ticonderoga-class missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58), and two Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers USS Gravely (DDG 107) and USS Mason (DDG 87).
The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) strike group is already in the Eastern Mediterranean. It includes five guided-missile destroyers and one missile cruiser. The US has recently decided to extend its deployment in the region.
In addition, the USS Bataan (LHD 5), a versatile amphibious assault ship with 2,000 Marines on board, is moving to the Mediterranean Sea. The US is also moving aircraft to the Middle East. F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters, F-15E Strike Eagle fighters and A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft have already arrived in the region.
