Joelle Pineau, who leads AI research at Meta, recognises the company's limited openness, but sees it as a necessary balance between sharing knowledge and protecting business interests. Pineau is in favour of rethinking the licensing of open source AI models.

Here's What We Know

Meta released its Llama 2 model relatively openly, but with restrictions that did not meet the criteria of the Open Source initiative. The move has drawn criticism from a number of experts.

Pinault believes that even limited openness helps Meta researchers take a more responsible approach to AI development. A fully open approach is not possible for security and business reasons, she believes.

Pino advocates changing licences for open source AI. Current licences do not take into account the scale of data in AI models and the risks of copyright infringement, she said. What's needed is an adaptation of open source principles to the realities of AI.
