It has been confirmed that a reboot of Disney's X-Files series is in development
Ryan Coogler, director of "Black Panther," is joining Disney to work on a new "X-Files" project with a more diverse cast. Disney have said that an "X-Files" series described as a "new version" is in development.
Here's What We Know
Details of the new "X-Files" project remain largely unknown at this point, but according to Bloomberg, the project is already underway.
"X-Files" creator Chris Carter revealed that Ryan Coogler is working on a reimagining of the series. Coogler, who was at the helm of the original "Creed" and the two "Black Panther" films, plans to introduce a more diverse cast compared to the original show.
Does this mean Mulder and Scully won't be involved in the X-Files reboot?
Nowadays, many reboots take place in the same world as their predecessors, but with an entirely new cast. Even if there is a need to involve the original characters in some way, it's usually done through references to characters and events from the original TV show.
With that in mind, it's possible that Coogler's X-Files reboot will also continue the franchise with new main characters, keeping the guest appearances of the original show's stars. Or perhaps the return of Mulder and Scully hinges on the interest of cast members David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
According to Duchovny, for him, the X-Files show consists of Krugler, him and Anderson. He doesn't even think about other options for the show. Anderson is also quite adamant in her statements and believes that "The X-Files" should either stay in the past or be completely rewritten, which would have her agreeing to reprise her role as Scully.
