James Gunn explained why the DCU's Swamp Thing was directed by James Mangold and not Guillermo del Toro
There has been quite a bit of excitement among DCU fans about the upcoming Swamp Thing film being given to James Mangold rather than the much-loved Guillermo del Toro. James Gunn, as usual when speaking to followers on social media, explained his position
Here's What We Know
Gunn reasoned that Mangold showed more interest in the project:
"Well, for starters, James actually expressed his interest to me (Guillermo, who I know and love, did not)"
Swamp Thing has previously been featured in films and television series, and the character's origins have usually stayed within the same scripted framework. Typically the plot revolves around a scientist who is the victim of a lab explosion set off by a certain character, who often turns into the antagonist, and then the scientist finds himself turning into a giant green monster.
But it looks like the interpretation will be different this time around, as Mangold has previously stated that he plans to make some changes to his version of Swamp Thing."
"But to me, the idea of making kind of almost a kind of noir mystery horror film about a guy who wakes up and he's this thing, and he's... there's this amnesiac quality of like "how did I get here and who did this to me." So I'm envisioning a kind of horror noir film following a creature that can't be seen trying to piece together from fragments of memory what happened and who did it."
When We Can Expect It
So far, "Swamp Thing" hasn't been given an exact release date, but estimating the production timeline, we shouldn't expect the film before 2025.
