The iconic monster is coming back: "Creature from the Black Lagoon" will get a sequel in comic book form on the 70th anniversary of the original 1954 film
"Creature from the Black Lagoon" is getting a comic sequel 70 years after the original film.
Here's What We Know
Skybound Entertainment will reportedly introduce a new limited edition comic book series called "Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!" as part of the Universal Monsters line this April. The four-issue series will be a full sequel to the original film series and will return to the classic Gill-man design by costume designer Millicent Patrick. The comic book premiere will coincide with the 70th anniversary of the original 1954 film.
The comic will be a collaboration between Dan Watters and Ram V, with art by Matthew Roberts and colour design by Dave Stewart.
Along with the iconic Gill-man monster, this comic will feature the character of Dr Edwin Thompson, a role played by Whit Bissel in the original film. They will be joined by a new character named Kate Marsden, a journalist who goes in search of serial killer Darwin Collier in the Amazon jungle. On her adventure, she encounters the very Creature from the Black Lagoon.
The original Creature from the Black Lagoon is deservedly considered one of the standout works of the first Universal Monsters period due to its vivid and intimidating monster, as well as its thrilling underwater scenes. In the subsequent sequel films, the plot took some unexpected twists and turns, including the surgery Gill-man underwent to adapt to land among humans, which ultimately led to less-than-perfect audience reviews.
