OpenAI has blocked a chatbot that imitated a US Democratic presidential candidate

OpenAI has blocked access to a chatbot based on the ChatGPT model, which was trained to mimic the opinions and speech style of Congressman Dean Phillips, who is running for the Democratic Party's nomination for US president in 2024.

OpenAI reported that they blocked the Dean.bot chatbot due to violations of ChatGPT usage rules. They prohibit political campaigning on behalf of real people without their consent.

Dean.bot was created by We Deserve Better, a Silicon Valley-based political action committee (PAC). To develop it, the PAC engaged Delphi, a startup specialising in cloning celebrities' speech and opinions using AI.

However, even the presence of OpenAI co-founder Matt Krisiloff in PAC's management team didn't help avoid a lockdown. After the media reported the existence of Dean.bot, OpenAI blocked Delphi developers from accessing ChatGPT.

A representative of presidential candidate Phillips' headquarters said that he did not approve of the creation of such a chatbot and does not plan to use similar technologies in his election campaign.

Nevertheless, experts note the growing interest in using AI capabilities in the political sphere. Although such experiments are forbidden by OpenAI rules for now, the situation may change in the future.
