The US National Science Foundation, with support from 10 other government agencies and 15 private partners including Microsoft, Amazon, NVIDIA, Meta and others, has launched the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot project.

Here's What We Know

NAIRR is to provide U.S. scientists with access to the computing power, data, and other resources needed to conduct AI research. Partner companies will provide support, including financial support, as well as share their own AI expertise.

NVIDIA and Microsoft separately highlighted the contributions each has made to NAIRR. The software tech giant has provided $20 million in Azure loans, access to models in the Azure OpenAI Service, and resources to work on AI fairness, accuracy, and privacy issues.

NVIDIA has pledged to open up access to its DGX Cloud and AI Enterprise software.

The project is part of U.S. President Joe Biden's Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence, which aims to strengthen U.S. leadership in the field. The pilot phase of NAIRR, which will last for one year, will focus on the application of AI in medicine and solving environmental problems.

Applications are already being accepted through the programme's website.
