The iOS 17.4 beta found mention of a new iPad with a horizontal Face ID camera
The other day Apple released the beta version of iOS 17.4, which introduced unpublished app downloads and many other changes related to EU antitrust laws. However, the publication 9to5Mac managed to find in the internal beta files of iOS 17.4 a code revealing information about the new iPad tablet.
Here's What We Know
According to this data, Apple is working on a new iPad model in which the TrueDepth front camera, which is used, among other things, for Face ID, will be located horizontally, that is, not on the top frame, but on the side. As a result, the front camera will be at the top when the iPad is in landscape orientation.
This is also confirmed by the new Face ID setup instructions: ""Face ID needs to be in landscape to learn how to recognize you""; ""During Face ID setup, iPad needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen. Once setup is complete, Face ID works in portrait and landscape"".
Currently, the 10th generation iPad is the only model with a horizontal front camera, but it has Touch ID instead of Face ID. The cameras in iPad Pro tablets are located on the top frame, which leads to inconvenience during video conferences and video calls, especially if the gadget is used together with a keyboard.
