Denis Villeneuve states that he only intends to film three episodes of "Dune" and if a sequel is conceived, it will be without him

Director Denis Villeneuve has always made it clear that he intends to make the Dune saga into a trilogy. Now, the director has confirmed that once the three films are completed, he will leave and if Warner Bros. want to return to Arrakis, another director will have to take over.

Here's What We Know

"For me, Dune: Messiah should be the last Dune film," Villeneuve candidly stated, despite the fact that science fiction author Frank Herbert wrote four more Dune books during his lifetime.

As a reminder, released in 2021, "Dune" tells the story of Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, the son of a powerful duke whose life is turned upside down when his father Leto, played by Oscar Isaac, accepts the role of steward on a hostile desert planet. At the end of Part 1, Paul and his mother Lady Jessica, played by Rebecca Ferguson, team up with the planet's native people, the Fremen, to rid it of the illegal and violent Harkonnens and fulfil Leto's dream of bringing peace to the land.

"Dune 2" will continue the plot from where the original story ended, with Paul, Jessica and Chani, played by Zendaya, in a power struggle against the ruthless Emperor Shaddam IV, played by Christopher Walken.

"A third part has not yet been confirmed, but Villeneuve and the cast have high hopes for 'Dune: Messiah.'

"The idea excites me very much" says Chalamet. "If the time and opportunity comes to complete the story with Messiah, I think we're all super-enthusiastic about that."".

"Dune: Part Two" is set for release on 1 March.
