Microsoft announces end of support for Publisher in 2026
What to expect
Support for Publisher will be extended until October 2026 to give users enough time to migrate to other alternatives.
Microsoft Publisher has served the tech enthusiast community for more than 25 years, starting in 1991 when it was first introduced as an affordable tool for creating personalised designs on the Windows 3.0 operating system. Over the years, the programme has undergone significant changes and improvements.
However, Microsoft has decided to end the life of Publisher by offering users the option of using other Microsoft 365 apps, such as Word, PowerPoint, or Designer, to accomplish similar tasks. In addition, Microsoft Create also offers a wide range of templates.
After 2026, users may encounter technical issues as the programme will be discontinued and .pub files may not be compatible with other applications.
Nevertheless, there are alternatives for desktop publishing, such as LibreOffice and Corel Draw, which have long provided a .pub import function.
