Google announces the closure of Google Pay in the U.S. in June
Google is making changes to its payment policy for the US and announced it yesterday, on its blog.
Here's What We Know
According to Google's latest blog post, users will no longer be able to access Google Pay or use this peer-to-peer payment feature after 4 June 2024. Although the app will no longer be functional from June, some access to the service will remain. Users will still be able to view and transfer funds to their bank account, for example. They will be able to do so from the GPay website even after the cut-off date.
In place of GPay, the company aims to provide a more streamlined experience with Google Wallet, which Google claims is used five times more often than the Google Pay app in the US. The main credit and debit card payment app, Wallet, will now take on additional roles that its predecessor previously fulfilled. This includes loyalty programmes for housing, tickets, passes and other documents, as well as payment cards. The app will also become the primary location for any offers that were previously available through Google Pay search.
Right now, access to the Google Pay app remains only in India, Singapore and the US.
