Meta, the owner of social networks Facebook and Instagram, is forming a special team to counter misinformation and abuse of generative artificial intelligence technologies during the upcoming European Parliament elections.
Here's What We Know
According to Meta's head of EU affairs, Marco Pancini, the team will be made up of experts from different divisions of the company. They will focus on identifying potential threats and promptly responding to them.
As noted, the fear is the rapid development of generative AI technologies capable of generating content that could be used to interfere in elections. The European Parliament elections will be held from 6-9 June 2024.
Meta is currently working with 26 independent fact-checking organisations in the EU and plans to add three more partners. The company has previously agreed a joint effort with Microsoft, OpenAI and other technology companies to prevent deceptive AI content from interfering with the 2024 elections.
