Samsung's flagship phones show sales rise globally
Market research shows that Samsung's 2024 handset sales are down month-on-month and year-on-year, but despite this loss, the company's flagship phones are selling well and showing signs of recovery.
Here's What We Know
According to new data from Hana Securities (@Tech_Reve), Samsung sold 1 per cent fewer phones in January 2024 compared to January 2023 and 11 per cent fewer phones compared to December 2023. However, that includes phones across the entire price range. In fact, it looks like Samsung sold fewer budget and mid-range phones, but managed to increase sales of flagship phones across the board.
Good news: Samsung's flagship smartphone sales are finally rebounding.

Samsung Electronics' smartphone sales in January 2024:
- Recorded a 1% decrease compared to the same month last year and an 11% decrease compared to the previous month, totalling 17.44 million units.

Samsung will sell 31.11 million units of the Galaxy S23 in 2023, beating the Galaxy S22, which sold 24.99 million units in 2022, by a whopping 24%. The report said that in 2023, Samsung sold 11.08 million Galaxy S23 base models, 5.68 million Galaxy S23+ units and 14.34 million Galaxy S23 Ultra units. The Galaxy S24 series also broke pre-order records in many countries, including Korea, where Samsung confirmed that 1.21 million pre-orders were recorded in just one week. In comparison, when the Galaxy S23 series was launched in early 2023, it received 1.09 million pre-orders in Korea over the same period.
Samsung's foldable devices are also in demand. Once again, the foldable flip phone form factor has been more successful. Samsung allegedly sold 4.33 million units of the Galaxy Flip 5 and 2.49 million of the Galaxy Fold 5. Sales of foldable phones were up year-over-year, but slightly, from 6.81 million to 6.83 million.
Overall, all high-end Galaxy smartphones seem to be feeling better despite the overall decline in Samsung smartphone sales worldwide. Flagship phones are gaining momentum and they could recover even more this year thanks to add-ons like Galaxy AI. Samsung is expected to announce a new series of foldable Galaxy Flip 6 and Fold 6 phones this summer, which could consist of three models instead of two.
