Brazil plans to buy new artillery systems and is considering several options

The Brazilian army has announced a tender for the purchase of 36 155-mm wheeled self-propelled artillery systems, but has not yet chosen which ones.

Here's What We Know

The country wants to replace all 130 existing M109 self-propelled artillery systems, so they started with a tender for 36 units. Opex360 noted that even in Brazil, the list of finalists in this competition is considered quite strange. Four air defence systems are competing for the "first place": the Slovakian Zuzana 2, the Israeli ATMOS 2000, the Chinese SH-15 and the French CAESAR.

For example, ATMOS 2000 is considered a strange choice for the final, as the Brazilian president made statements the day before that could be interpreted as "anti-Israeli", and the Chinese SH-15, as the publication notes, has worse performance.

Brazil plans to determine the winner in a test of all four artillery systems to be held this month. The country is ready to allocate €167 million for this project and will expect the weapons by 2025.
