"Godzilla Minus One" made a historic breakthrough by winning an Oscar
The film Godzilla Minus One made history by winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 2024 ceremony. This marked a record-breaking achievement for the King of the Monsters and in general.
Here's What We Know
"Godzilla Minus One" is a 2023 Japanese sci-fi film that beat out strong competitors such as Disney's "Guardians of the Galaxy. Part 3" from Disney and "The Creature" from 20th Century Studios to take home the top prize for visual effects. It became a historic moment for several reasons. It was the first time in the franchise's nearly 70-year history that Godzilla received a nomination (and now a win) at the Academy Awards. It is the first Japanese film to win a trophy for visual effects.
The film, Godzilla Minus One, is set in post-war Japan and follows a young man named Koichi Shikishima who flees his fate as a kamikaze pilot in the final days of World War II and Godzilla's sudden appearance.
The film became an unprecedented box office success worldwide. It was originally scheduled for a week theatrical run in the US, but due to popularity, the timeline was extended, resulting in a month-long run and culminating in the release of a special black and white version of Godzilla Minus One/Minus Colour this year.
No sequel is currently planned, but director Takashi Yamazaki, whose awards season campaign drew him to the possibility of directing in the West, including a dream of working on Star Wars, has discussed the potential in light of its monumental success. A success made even greater by this historic win.
