Bulgaria hands over 100 promised armoured personnel carriers to Ukraine

In the summer of 2023, Bulgaria said that it was going to send Ukraine a large batch of old armoured personnel carriers. Now there is information that they are already in Ukraine.

Here's What We Know

This was told by the Minister of defence of Bulgaria Todor Tagarev. We are talking about 100 BTR-60. First Bulgaria collected equipment throughout the country and brought it to the capital. The first batch was shipped on 7 March, and the second batch after that. Now all the promised APCs are already in Ukraine.

According to the minister, the transfer of the equipment cost Bulgaria 87,000 euros. For this purpose, the Ministry of Defence engaged 247 servicemen and civilians from the Logistics Support Command, the Army and the Bulgarian Military Police Service. Incidentally, in return, Bulgaria is to receive M1117 armoured personnel carriers from the US.

Flashback

The BTR-60 is a Soviet armoured personnel carrier with 8×8 wheel arrangement. It was developed between 1956 and 1959. It is a floating armoured vehicle designed to transport infantry. The BTR-60 is equipped with a water cannon engine. This allows it to move on water. The BTR-60 was widely used in the Armed Forces of the Warsaw Pact countries, as well as in many other countries. Despite its obsolescence, it remained in service until the beginning of the 21st century.
