SpaceX is developing a $1.8bn network of spy satellites for the US
SpaceX, under the leadership of Elon Musk, has signed a secret contract to build a network of spy satellites for the US National Reconnaissance Office.
Here's What We Know
Reuters reports that the $1.8bn deal involves the launch of multiple satellites that will be able to take pictures of the Earth.
This network, known as Starshield, will provide the agency with intelligence and surveillance data, operating as a swarm in low orbit.
Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, confirmed that Starshield will be owned by the US government and controlled by the Department of Defence's space forces. Last autumn, SpaceX signed a contract with the US Space Force to provide satellite communications for the military through Starlink.
A NRO spokesperson did not comment on SpaceX's involvement, but confirmed that the agency is working to create the most powerful, diverse and resilient space-based intelligence system in the world. This step will significantly expand the ability of the US government and military to identify potential targets on the earth's surface. Details about the launch and other project participants have not yet been disclosed.
