Apple is ending its free repair programme for MacBooks with butterfly keyboards this year

Apple is ending its free repair programme for various MacBook models with its infamous butterfly keyboards in 2024.

Apple started using this mechanism in 2015 with the release of the 12-inch MacBook. After that, the company received a large number of complaints from users: according to them, dust, crumbs and other debris are easily filed under the keys. As a result, the keyboard stops working correctly: the keys are not pressed, stick or produce several identical characters with a single press.

After 2019, Apple stopped using such keyboards in its laptops. After a class action lawsuit that was settled in July 2022, Apple agreed to compensate gadget owners who had already paid to repair the keyboards and opened a free repair programme.

The programme covered a wide range of Apple laptop models: the 2015-2017 MacBooks, the 13-inch MacBook Air with "Retina" screen released in 2018 and 2019, and many MacBook Pro models that came out between 2016 and 2019.

The free repair programme is valid for 4 years after sales. Right now, only the 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro 13-inch MacBook Pro that was sold until November 2020 falls under this criterion. So, unless the company makes changes, the programme will close in November 2024.
